ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal is a treatment modality widely used across the world to save a tooth for a function of chewing, speech and asthetics. Root canal is a treatment used to repair or save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and blood vessels containing tissue called PULP is removed and the inside of the tooth is shaped and cleaned with disinfectant solution, then whole space is filled with plastic, rubbery material called gutta percha throughout the length of tooth root. After that permanent filling is done on top of it to seal the tooth in all directions.

-Why does tooth need root canal treatment-
When a tooth’s nerve & blood vessels containing tissue called pulp is damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. These bacteria can cause abscess around tooth. An abscess is pus filled area that forms around tooth. It occurs when the infection spreads all the way past the ends of roots of the tooth such infection can potentially cause.

  • Swelling that may spread to face neck or head.
  • Bone loss of jaw bone.
  • Drainage of infection by making hole through gums or outer skin.

Indications of root canal treatment-

  • Severe toothache while chewing or eating.
  • Hypersensitivity or pain to heat or cold temperatures.
  • Discoloration or darkening of tooth due to past injury.
  • Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
  • Persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.
  • Intentionally done for prosthetic treatment.
  • Worn out, cracked or chipped tooth.
3D Root canal filling-
It is the current concept which includes three dimensional filling of root canal system. According to recent research, tooth root does not have only primary lumen throughout the root length but also has horizontal branches communicating with it. These horizontal branches are called as “Accessory canals”. Accessory canals are potential sites for a failure of root canal procedure. Modern dentistry is capable of taking care of accessory canals for the predictable and successful root canal treatment.
